The Mathematics Research Institute provides a friendly environment for our excellent and exciting research in mathematical science.
Our research is structured as follows:
Several of our staff and PhD students have cross-disciplinary interests and work in more than one of these groups and centres. Our research interests are a crucial part of our innovative and friendly MSc and PhD programmes.

Some highlights:
- More than 500 publications since 2001 in peer-reviewed journals in mathematics and a wide variety of exciting interdisciplinary science;
- More than £2 million research funding since 2001 from advanced number theory to cutting-edge real-world applications such as convection in stars and planets, nonlinear laser dynamics, weather prediction, climate change and neural functioning;
- Strong work collaborations with government agencies (e.g. EPSRC, NERC, BBSRC, DEFRA, Environment Agency) and industry (e.g. Met Office, Bookham Technology, Institute for Grasslands and Environment Research);
- Recent appointment of 11 new academic staff including 3 joint Met-Office funded professors, one RCUK, one NERC and two GWR lectureship fellows;
- Regular weekly seminar programmes and visitor programme;
