Mechanical Engineering - BEng (H300) & MEng (H302)

Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Engineering is a challenging and exciting subject. Our main objective is to provide our students with the knowledge and flexibility to enable them to play a leading role in the creation of the technology of the 21st century.

Topics covered include a range of areas relating to Mechanical Engineering, including statics and dynamics, manufacturing, solid mechanics and thermodynamics, but a great deal of emphasis is also put on the essential transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, information technology and computer skills. An important aspect of all the programmes is the emphasis on project work and the practice and development of design skills.

Accordingly, the programmes are suitable for those who wish to pursue careers as professional engineers employed by industry or public bodies requiring mechanical engineering expertise combined with good team and communication skills. The programme is also well suited for those who aim to become managers or consultants in industry and commerce and wish to start with a sound background in modern engineering.

This programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The second and third year contain some core modules, as well as optional modules from which students may choose, including the Erasmus scheme.

For the BEng programmes the third year is the final year, and BEng modules are taught in smaller BEng only groups. A substantial individual project module accounting for one third of the credits in the third year is undertaken by all students.

MEng students continue their course into the fourth year where modules, now at Masters level, are more student-centred. The fourth year consists of a substantial interdisciplinary group project, accounting for half the credits in the fourth year, as well as options from a wide range of specialised modules.
