Electronic Engineering - BEng (H610) & MEng (H601)

Electronic Engineering

There have been remarkable advances in electronics over the years - think of mobile phones, MP3 players, satnav, wireless networks and host of other electronic devices that shape the way we live today. Electronic engineers are at the forefront of this fast-moving world. Their expertise is in great demand and a professional electronic engineer can expect an exciting and diverse career.

Our courses will involve you in all aspects of the design and construction of modern electronic systems, blending theory and computer simulation with extensive practical work in the laboratory. After studying the concepts of electronic engineering in the first year, along with other engineering topics and professional skills, you will continue in the second and third years with a range of advanced modules in areas such as communications engineering, digital signal processing, microprocessors and PICs, control engineering, analogue and digital design.

In your third year you will carry out an individual project. This may be linked with industry, or with our world-leading electronics research in memory technology, renewable energy and biomedical electronics. There is also the option to carry out your project abroad as part of the Erasmus scheme. Foreign language modules are available to support this, but can also be taken by any interested student. You may also choose to take our 'Commerical & Industrial Experience' module that provides valuable practical work experience to supplement your studies.

MEng students continue their course into the fourth year, taking a range of specialised Masters level options as well as a major interdisciplinary group project.

All our electronics programmes are fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) - and have been for over 25 years. Indeed, all students joining our electronics courses automatically become student members of the IET, enabling them to take full advantage of all the support and career development the IET has to offer. And on successful completion of your degree you will automatically become a full member, able to use the prestigious MIET after your name.
